Body Shape Calculator

Find your body shape from three measurements in inches or cm, and see which nighty dresses and pajama sets suit it best.

How to measure

Use a soft measuring tape over light clothing. Stand straight, keep the tape level and breathe normally.

  1. 1

    Bust

Around the fullest part of the bust.

  2. 2

    Waist

Around the narrowest part, usually just above the navel.

  3. 3

    Hips

Around the widest part of the hips and seat, feet together.

How it works: the calculator compares bust to hips (3.6 inches apart or more makes a pear or inverted triangle) and both to the waist (9 inches or more smaller makes an hourglass), the rules most body shape calculators use.

Body shapes and the nightwear that suits them

Hourglass

Bust and hips about the same, with a clearly narrower waist.

  • Wrap and tie-waist nighties that follow the waist
  • Button-front pajama shirts with a belt or tie
  • Fitted cami sets in soft cotton or silk

Pear (triangle)

Hips wider than the bust, often with a defined waist.

  • A-line and flared nighties that skim the hips
  • Tops with detail at the neckline or shoulders: collars, frills, prints
  • Straight or wide-leg pajama trousers in plain colours

Inverted triangle

Bust or shoulders wider than the hips, with a straighter waist.

  • V necklines and simple, plain tops
  • A-line nighties with a flared or tiered hem
  • Wide-leg or printed pajama trousers

Rectangle

Bust, waist and hips fairly even, with a straighter waist.

  • Tie-waist, belted or frilled nighties
  • Tiered and layered styles that add shape
  • Cami sets and shirt-style pajama sets in prints

Apple (round)

Waist about as wide as the bust and hips, or wider.

  • Empire-line and A-line nighties that flow from under the bust
  • V necklines and button-front pajama shirts
  • Soft, breathable cotton and linen that doesn't cling

Questions

How is body shape calculated?

By comparing three measurements: bust, waist and hips. If bust and hips are close and the waist is clearly smaller, the shape is hourglass. If the hips are 3.6 inches or more larger than the bust, it is pear; the other way round, inverted triangle. Even measurements give rectangle, and a waist as wide as the bust and hips gives apple.

What are the 5 body shapes?

Hourglass, pear (triangle), inverted triangle, rectangle and apple (round). Some calculators split hourglass into top and bottom hourglass; the styling advice is much the same.

Which nighty suits every body shape?

An A-line nighty in a soft, breathable fabric like cotton or linen. It skims rather than clings, flows from the bust and moves with you while you sleep.

Can my body shape change?

Yes, with weight changes, age or after pregnancy. Measure again whenever your clothes start fitting differently; the result is a guide for choosing styles, not a label.

What size should I buy once I know my shape?

Shape tells you the style, size comes from your measurements. Use the nighty size chart or the pajama size chart with the same three numbers.
